LIBRO - CATÁLOGO HAITZ DE DIEGO

Versus , 2020 Acrílico y técnica mixta sobre lienzo Acrylic and Mixed Media on Canvas 120 cm x 120 cm 84 Paint as testimony: THE PROCÉS As I have said, any kind of quick review of the artistic production of any period demonstrates the intertwined relationships between the artist and the social, political or cultural context in which they develop, because it is the fruit of a constant friction between the artist’s vision and everyday life, something inherited from the post-Ro- mantic historical avant-gardes. This aspect is very evident in this small se- ries, which focuses on the artist’s impres- sions in a context that he experienced first- hand. Barcelona, a city prone to revolts and citizen protests against everything es- tablished, experienced an outbreak of vio- lence during October and November 2019 unleashed in its streets as a result, on this occasion, of the Catalan government’s pro-independence challenge, something that profoundly affected both the econo - my and the international image of the city, which has become, as a result, a destina- tion to avoid for international tourism. Dur- ing this period, the streets were the scene of great social unrest with the intervention of state forces and images of great brutality THE UNDERLYING STORY “Moving to the rhythm of sirens and neon lights. It was the after- math of the Catalan referendum of 1 October 2017 for self-deter- mination. The dance is still going on” (pages 76 and 77). “The marches were called to defend democracy and freedom after the arrests of some politicians, the ‘de facto’ intervention of the Generalitat and the violation of civil rights” (pages 86 and 87). “Graffiti on the police parapets in front of the Generalitat’s Home Affairs department to put an end to fascism. This is how the pro-independence radicals who provoked police charges and arrests a week after the start of riots across Catalonia following the ‘procés’ ruling proclaimed their aims. The protest took place on 29 September 2018 in Barcelona, coinciding with a police demonstration —called by the association Jusapol— in favour of equal pay” (pages 82 and 83).
