that the figure of the horse —a genre in its own right— depicted in freedom, as in this beautiful collection, appeals to its freedom of spirit, an as- pect that was particularly important in Greek art, which was very much focused on the perfection of its anatomy and the search for balance. The depiction of the naked horse entered a splen- did period from the 1830s onwards, with artists such as Antoine-Louis Barye, thanks to whose elaborate sculptures, devoid of any human pres- ence, the horse, along with many other animals from his marvellous bestiary, recovered their lin- eage and caste. Even so, there are few painters who depict the horse as is. In this collection, which also includes portraits of Miura bulls, the artist works skilfully with colour, to which he continues to attach capital impor- tance, something that is latently evident in this series. With a Romantic flare-up, his depictions show a mastery of proportions and a veneration for gestures. He knows how to fix the snapshot of movement, demonstrating his knowledge and re- vealing his devoted passion for both animals.
